Caitlyn Nevins: Success doesn’t come without hard work

By Brayden May

WHEN Caitlyn Nevins first stood on stage at the Sportstar awards night, a video of one of three premiership successes played behind her.

It was a moment which reflected Nevins at the peak of her powers.

But her journey had been anything but smooth, facing several non-selections and injuries before earning a shot in the Super Netball competition.

Three years in and the sport at the top level looked – Nevins had three premierships (Melbourne Vixens 2014, Queensland Firebirds 2015-16).

Although, the former star wing attack was quick to stress to those in attendance that the success didn’t come without hard work.

And it all started in the twin towns.

“I knew so many faces in the room which made me a little bit nervous before I went up on stage,” she said.

“But at the same time, they’ve supported me throughout my career, so it was nice to be able to share my journey with all of them.”

And returning to Echuca-Moama, brought back several memories for Nevins who had previously been nominated for the Sportstar award herself.

“On the way, my family was reminiscing about the time dad, my brother and myself were all nominated for the award at the same time, so this night means a lot to our family,” she said.

“Growing up, the Sportstar awards night was something I always held close to my heart and it was always nice to be acknowledged in the local community.”

While the former Diamond may have been the star attraction, she did not want to take away from the real stars of the show – the junior and senior nominees.

“It was really nice hearing everyone’s own unique stories,” she said.

“The range of different sports is phenomenal, and I think that is the best thing about this day and age.

“It’s great to see so many different sports, which people can stay involved in for long periods of time and stay active.”

While Nevins now be retired, she made it clear her hard work won't be ending as she continues to recover from the effects of a knee reconstruction.
