LUCIA Rochford was astounded at the support she has received since setting the ambitious goal of running 10km.
The St Joseph’s year 11 student will take on Run Melbourne later this month to raise money for motor neurone disease (MND).
MND is the name given to a group of diseases in which neurones fail to work normally. Muscles then gradually weaken and waste, as neurones degenerate and die.
Lucia was inspired to raise money for the cause by Neale Daniher, who was diagnosed with MND in 2013 and is now a prominent campaigner for medical research.
“MND is a terrible disease and anything that can be done to help out is a good thing,” Lucia said.
“It touches so many lives and finding a cure would be life changing for so many.”
Lucia has so far received $1500 worth of products and vouchers to go towards a raffle she is running to raise money for her cause.
“The generosity has been unreal. So many businesses have been willing to support what I’m doing,” she said.
“I’m selling raffle tickets and people can donate through a website or a tin in local businesses.”
Despite a few people doubting her ability to run 10km, Lucia said she was ramping up her training to prepare for the big day.
“I play netball at the moment so that helps a lot and I’ll start to go for longer runs to prepare myself for the big day on July 29,” she said.
“It will be great to reach the finish line to prove to myself that I can do it and knowing I’ve done it for a great cause.
“My goal is to raise $1000 and I’m hoping people will get behind me to make that happen.”
Raffle tickets cost $2 each and are being sold at Annabella Clothing, High St Barber and Hair Room 501 and there is a donation tin at The Odd Captain Cafe and Bar
