THEY may have been a silent organisation but for the past 22 years the Order of the Eastern Star has been helping the Echuca-Moama community.
But they have closed their doors.
‘‘Unfortunately we just don’t have enough numbers to keep going,’’ worthy matron Sandra Walker said.
‘‘It is sad and I feel sorry for the organisations we continually give donations to that will no longer see that money.’’
The organisation has been fundraising for the past two decades with more than 90 per cent of funds raised staying in the community.
‘‘We do it to help our local community,’’ Ms Walker said.
‘‘Whether it is the Echuca Specialist School, the Search and Rescue, the fire brigade or the hospital, the money stays here and helps local people.
‘‘Say a child needs a new wheelchair and the parents can’t afford it we will make a private donation to make that happen.’’
The Order of the Eastern Star is one of the largest fraternal organisations across the globe and arrived in Echuca in 1995.
‘‘This is our 23rd year and we have raised money in every way you can think of,’’ Ms Walker said.
‘‘From sausage sizzles to barbecues to cake stalls and everything in between.
‘‘Friday was a special day with plenty of tears but was our final hurrah.’’
Unfortunately Ms Walker said they aren’t the only organisation which is struggling with numbers.
‘‘We aren’t the only ones,’’ she said.
‘‘Plenty of organisations just can’t keep going because they don’t have enough people on hand.
‘‘And the organisations we would have helped now will have to go without those donations.’’
