ECHUCA-MOAMA has raised more than $2 million for the Good Friday Appeal.

And the organiser, the Lion’s Club, couldn’t be more proud.

‘‘It just goes to show how much the people of our town continue to care about this appeal,’’ 2018 organiser Laurie Stewart said. ‘‘Over the past 20 plus years the people of Echuca-Moama have continued to show their support.

‘‘It just goes to show the type of people we have here.’’

Laurie attended the Royal Children’s Hospital recently to accept a plaque on behalf of the club and the towns.

‘‘It was a night the hospital could say thanks to the appeal and people who collect,’’ he said. ‘‘We were running a bit late so when we got there I felt a bit out of place when the woman ushered me in and said we were getting an award.

‘‘Ken Walter was in my position for 22 years so to be accepting it on behalf of the club seemed a bit wrong but it goes to show how much work he has done. And I am pretty proud to be taking over from someone like Ken.’’

The Good Friday Appeal is one of the biggest days for the Lion’s Club and Laurie said they work extremely hard.

‘‘This year we raised in excess of $80,000 which is pretty massive considering the size of our towns,’’ he said.

‘‘We were only $10,000 behind a city like Bendigo. And we can only get better considering the major intersection in Echuca we weren’t allowed to collect from this year — that cost us about $4000.

‘‘So hopefully we can work something out for next year and the towns keep supporting us.’’
