MOAMA Markets may still call Kerrabee Soundshell home for the foreseeable future, with Murray River Council extending the expiry date with the current licensee to March 1, 2019.

The 12-month extension allows for the timely finalisation of issues and negotiations associated with a longer term lease arrangement.

The Sunday market has been operating at the soundshell for approximately four years, under a licence issued by council.

The licensee originally challenged the licence requirements through legal advice, after which council resolved to keep the markets at the soundshell, drawing out the process.

A process Cr Tony Aquino said was leaving many stallholders in an anxious place.

‘‘Local business people are desperate for an answer about the lease,’’ Cr Aquino said.

‘‘This market is an icon for the town and if it moves away from the soundshell it will die a very slow death. We need to look at this seriously.’’

‘‘This is why we’re extending the expiry date by 12 months,’’ general manager Des Bilske said.

‘‘It could take six months, it could take longer. But it’s not up to us.

‘‘Within this time, we will be looking for a long-term solution. If we get clearance, we’ll be looking for a long-term lease.’’
